About the Firm
A Small Lexington Family Law Firm, Built Around the Part Most Firms Rush Past.
We're an all-woman team that limits its practice to family law. We measure our work by something simple: did you always know what was happening, and did you feel steadier for having us beside you?
The Firm You'd Choose on Purpose
Most people don't choose a family law firm. They panic-pick one, under pressure, at the worst moment of their lives. We built Kershaw & Baumgardner to be the firm you'd choose on purpose if you had the time to.
We're intentionally a smaller practice. That's not a limitation; it's the design. It means the attorney you meet is the attorney on your case, the team knows your file without re-reading it back to you, and you're a client—not a case number in a stack of hundreds.
Family law is the most personal area of law there is. It runs on trust, communication, and the willingness to sit with someone in a hard moment without flinching. That's the practice we built.
Credentials & What Sets Us Apart
A practice limited to family law.
We don't divide our focus. Divorce, custody, support, prenuptial agreements, post-decree matters, and the resolution options around them are what we do.
All three attorneys are Fellows of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.
Valerie, Suzanne, and Kami each hold this national fellowship in matrimonial law—a rare distinction that reflects deep, recognized experience in family law. It is a fellowship, not a board certification or specialization.
Decades of combined Lexington family law experience.
We practice in the Fayette County courtrooms where your case will be heard—and that local knowledge matters more than most people realize.
An all-woman team.
Being an all-woman team isn't our marketing; it's our makeup. Clients tell us it changes how the work feels, especially for people navigating divorce, custody, and the fear that comes with both.
The Human Element
We do this work because the stakes are human, not abstract. The people who come to us are usually carrying more than a legal problem; they're carrying fear about their kids, their home, and what their life looks like on the other side. The most meaningful part of our job is taking some of that weight, replacing uncertainty with a plan, and helping someone walk out steadier than they walked in.
What Working With Us Looks Like
We return calls and respond to messages, and we tell you upfront how and when you'll hear from us.
We explain the process in plain English, before each stage, so nothing lands as a surprise.
We're honest about cost and about your odds, even when the honest answer is the harder one.
We treat the people across the table—and your family—with respect. Steadiness is a strategy, not just a manner.
